    Common Interview Questions

    A.

My close process starts with a timeline agreed with the team before month-end: prepayment and accrual postings by day 2, balance sheet reconciliations by day 5, P&L review and variance commentary by day 7. I work from a close checklist to ensure nothing is missed. I reconcile all balance sheet accounts monthly — not just key ones. I flag significant variances to the finance manager proactively with explanations, not just numbers. A clean close is about preparation, not just execution.

I build checks into every process: reconciling control accounts, cross-checking figures between reports, and using formulas that self-validate in Excel. I never rely on memory alone — I document my workings and assumptions clearly so they can be reviewed. I also build in review time rather than rushing the final step. When I identify an error, I find the root cause and update my process to prevent recurrence. Accuracy in accounting is a discipline, not an accident.

I prepare monthly P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow reports with supporting variance analysis — explaining actuals vs budget vs prior year in plain language. I've produced board packs, regional management reports, and statutory accounts. I work closely with auditors at year-end and understand the audit process well. I'm also experienced in preparing reports that non-finance stakeholders can understand and act on, not just technically correct documents.

I'm proficient in Xero, MYOB, and SAP — covering bank reconciliations, AP/AR, payroll, and reporting. I've also used Oracle and Dynamics 365 in larger organisations. I'm advanced in Excel — comfortable with VLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH, pivot tables, and building dynamic financial models. I adapt quickly to new systems. My experience with multiple platforms has taught me that the process is usually more important than the specific tool.

I maintain a tax calendar to ensure all lodgement deadlines are tracked. For BAS, I reconcile the GST control account before preparation and review the coding of transactions before lodging. For payroll tax, I calculate state-by-state based on wages and threshold groupings. I stay current with ATO rulings and legislative updates. For complex issues, I engage our tax advisors. I treat compliance as an ongoing process, not a once-a-year event.

I investigate to understand the full extent — single entry or systemic? I correct the error, document it with journal references and explanations, and notify my manager promptly. If it affects prior period accounts that are already reported, I assess materiality and follow the appropriate accounting treatment (restatement or current period correction). I then review the process that allowed the error and implement a control to prevent recurrence. Transparency is non-negotiable.

I prepare thoroughly — clean reconciliations, organised working papers, and a clear audit file before auditors arrive. I respond to queries promptly and completely. I treat auditors as partners, not adversaries, and engage proactively on complex judgements rather than waiting for queries. I've found that well-prepared accounts and open communication result in shorter, less stressful audits. I also stay in contact with advisors throughout the year, not just at year-end.

I'm currently [completing / have completed] my CA/CPA qualification and am committed to maintaining CPD requirements annually. I'm interested in developing my financial analysis and commercial advisory skills alongside my technical accounting expertise. In the longer term, I'd like to progress to a Financial Controller role where I can contribute to business strategy as well as technical reporting. I see every role as an opportunity to build depth as well as breadth.
