Common Interview Questions
Brand development starts with a clear positioning: who is the brand for, what unique value does it deliver, and what is its emotional and rational promise? I translate positioning into a brand architecture — identity (logo, visual system), voice, and the experience delivered at every touchpoint. Brand protection means ensuring consistency: reviewing communications for on-brand messaging, managing category adjacencies carefully, and monitoring the competitive landscape. A brand is built over years through consistent experience and eroded quickly through inconsistency.
Launch is a business problem before it's a marketing problem: who is the target customer, what is the channel strategy, and what does success look like at 90 days and 12 months? I build integrated launch plans covering advertising, PR, digital, trade, and retail activation. I coordinate across agencies and internal teams to a single creative idea and launch calendar. I set pre-launch, launch, and post-launch measurement milestones. A launch is a story that needs to be told consistently across every audience channel at the right moment.
I commission and interpret brand tracking studies (brand awareness, consideration, preference, NPS), consumer segmentation research, concept testing, and post-campaign measurement. I build brand health scorecards from multiple sources: quantitative research, social listening, customer feedback, and retail sales data. I bring insights to the briefing process: the best creative is informed by a deep understanding of the consumer's world. I also challenge agency insights rather than accepting them uncritically — methodology and sample matter.
Agency relationships work best when briefs are excellent, timelines are realistic, and feedback is specific and constructive. I write briefs that include the consumer insight, single-minded proposition, mandatory content, tone, and success criteria — a vague brief produces vague work. I give feedback that references the brief, not personal preference. I build genuine relationships with agency teams — understanding their craft and respecting their expertise. And I protect good creative work internally: being a courageous client for great ideas is as important as being a demanding one for commercial results.
Brand investment is mix of long-term brand building (equity-driving, hard to measure in the short term) and activation (sales-driving, more directly attributable). I use Binet and Field's 60/40 framework as a starting point and adjust based on brand health and competitive context. I measure: brand health metrics (monthly brand tracking), media metrics (reach, frequency, share of voice), and commercial outcomes (market share, premium pricing power, revenue). I present brand investment to finance in terms of long-term equity building alongside short-term return.
I lead NPD from the consumer insight stage through to launch. I synthesise consumer research into genuine unmet need (not just "product I'd buy"), brief the product development team on the consumer opportunity, and project-manage the process through concept, prototype, consumer testing, and commercialisation. I work closely with supply chain and finance to ensure the innovation is viable at the right price point. I kill weak innovations early — bad NPD consumes resources that should flow to established brands.
I've developed always-on digital content strategies, managed social channels (Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook), briefed and managed influencer programs, and built brand presence through content marketing and SEO. I approach digital with the same brand discipline as broadcast: every post, ad, and comment is a brand expression. I use digital's measurability to test and learn: validating messaging and creative assets before investing in broader brand campaigns. I'm also experienced in managing brand crises on social media, where speed and tone matter enormously.
Brand and sales work best as partners, not separate functions. I involve sales in the brand planning process so commercial reality is built in from the start. I create sales enablement tools — brand story decks, category presentations, in-store activation guidelines — that give the sales team the material they need to win at retail. I participate in trade presentations. I also listen: retail feedback on customer response to brand activity is the most direct signal of whether brand investment is landing in the market.
