    Common Interview Questions

    A.

I hold a [state] Electrical Licence — [A-grade/B-grade/Restricted], which allows me to [perform/supervise] electrical installation work. I have a current White Card (WHS Construction Induction) and [First Aid/CPR certificate, valid to X]. I'm also [REC/RES holder, licensed to install solar PV/batteries]. I maintain my licences through CPD and keep a current record of all certifications. I'm happy to provide copies at any point.

Safety is my non-negotiable starting point. I always identify and isolate the circuit, test for dead using a calibrated test instrument before touching conductors, and apply LOTO (lockout/tagout) procedures. I never rely on a single isolating device. I wear appropriate PPE for the work: insulated tools, safety glasses, and arc flash protection where required. I check WHS plans and work method statements before starting any job. I also communicate my isolation to others in the work area — an unlabelled isolation is an invisible hazard.

I've completed [residential new build wiring, commercial fit-outs, industrial maintenance, data/communications cabling, switchboard upgrades, solar PV installation, EV charger installation — tailor to your experience]. I'm comfortable with [three-phase, control wiring, automation, fault-finding, LED lighting upgrades, safety switching]. I'm experienced with [high-rise, industrial, healthcare, retail environments — tailor]. I adapt quickly to new environments and always review relevant drawings and specifications before starting work on a new site.

I'm proficient reading single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, switchboard schedules, floor plans with electrical overlays, and cable schedules. I cross-reference drawings with specifications and check for discrepancies before starting installation. If I find a conflict between drawings and specs, I raise it with the project electrician or engineer before assuming an interpretation. Accurate reading of drawings prevents rework and, more importantly, prevents dangerous installations.

An intermittent earth fault on a commercial building's lighting circuit had been problematic for months. I systematically isolated sections of the circuit using a Megger to find where the insulation resistance dropped. The fault was in a conduit run that had been damaged during a subsequent trades fit-out. I traced the damage, repaired the cable run, and retested to confirm resolution. I also created a marked-up drawing showing the repair location for the building's maintenance records. Methodical fault-finding beats guesswork every time.

I work to AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) as a minimum standard and stay current with amendments and updates. I use compliant materials — tested and approved to relevant standards. I complete Electrical Safety Certificates for all prescribed work and ensure inspections are done where required. I attend regular industry training and refer to technical resources when I encounter unusual situations rather than assuming. I also participate in toolbox talks and briefings on site to ensure I'm aligned with the specific project safety requirements.

    A.

I plan each day the night before — reviewing what materials, tools, and drawings I need so I'm not chasing things on-site. I communicate my schedule to the site supervisor so any access or coordination needs are sorted in advance. When managing multiple jobs, I communicate proactively if one job runs long — I never just disappear from a site without notice. I keep my vehicle stocked with common materials so small issues don't require a job hold. Professional time management is about preparation and communication.

I hold a [CEC accreditation] for solar PV installation and have installed [residential / commercial / utility-scale] systems. I design systems using appropriate software [PVSell, Aurora, Pylon+], install to AS/NZS 4777, and commission and test inverters and battery storage systems. I understand grid connection requirements and the Clean Energy Regulator's STC system. As EV charger installation grows, I've also completed [EVSE installation / charging network connection] work. Renewable energy is a growing part of the electrical industry and I actively pursue skills in this area.
