Common Interview Questions
I start by interrogating the brief: who is the audience, what action do we want them to take, what's the tone, and what are the constraints? I research the context — brand, competitors, cultural references. I sketch multiple directions before touching software — getting broad before going deep. I present a range of concepts to the client with clear rationale for each, then iterate based on feedback. I also build in time for fresh eyes before final delivery — things you miss in the heat of production are obvious after a break.
Constraints are often the source of creativity, not the enemy of it. A tight budget forces creative problem-solving; a restrictive brand guide pushes you to innovate within the system. I frame constraints as a creative challenge rather than a limitation. That said, if a constraint will genuinely compromise the outcome, I raise it early with clear justification — never at delivery. The best creative work solves a business problem beautifully, within whatever constraints exist.
I listen to feedback with genuine openness — clients see things I don't. I try to understand the underlying concern behind the feedback ("you don't like the blue — is it the specific shade, or does it feel too cold?"). If I still believe my original direction is stronger, I explain the reasoning with reference to the brief and user needs. But I'm not precious — if the client makes an informed choice I disagree with, I execute it to the highest standard possible. The work is for them, not for my portfolio.
I've developed brand identities from logo concept through to comprehensive brand guidelines — covering logo usage, colour palette, typography, photography style, iconography, and tone of voice. I've also worked within established guidelines for large brands, understanding how to stretch guidelines creatively while maintaining consistency. I believe good brand guidelines should enable creativity, not just restrict it — so I write guidelines that answer the "why" behind every rule.
I use project management tools (Asana, Trello, or a detailed Notion system) to track every project's status and deadline. I front-load client communication — getting clear briefs and sign-offs upfront saves expensive late-stage revisions. I build realistic timelines with buffer for revisions and unexpected changes. When priorities conflict, I communicate proactively rather than silently compromising quality on one project. Delivering consistently good work on time is the foundation of client trust.
I'm proud of [a specific project]. The challenge was [brief description]. I approached it by [process/thinking]. The result was [outcome — award, positive client feedback, measurable business result]. What makes me proud is not just the visual outcome but that [it solved a real problem / it pushed my skills / it achieved the commercial goal]. I'd encourage you to look at it in my portfolio — I'm happy to walk you through the thinking behind it.
I'm advanced in the Adobe Creative Suite — Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and After Effects for motion work. I'm proficient in Figma for UI/UX and collaborative design. I use Sketch, Canva (for client-managed templates), and have experience with Cinema 4D for 3D elements. I also understand the basics of web production — HTML/CSS — which helps me design with implementation in mind. I stay current with tools and actively learn new platforms as they become relevant to the work.
Typography is often the most important design decision — type carries meaning, sets tone, and determines readability. I select typefaces that serve the brand personality and content type, not personal preference. I pay close attention to hierarchy, leading, tracking, measure (line length), and white space. I test typography at actual size across devices, not just in the design file. Good typography is largely invisible — it makes the content easier to read without calling attention to itself.
