    Common Interview Questions

    A.

I start by deeply understanding the business unit's strategy, challenges, and talent needs — not just attending the HR agenda items in their meetings. I position myself as a strategic partner, bringing workforce data and insights to leadership discussions. I build trust through delivery: solving problems quickly, following through on commitments, and providing practical, commercially-aware advice. The best HR partnerships are built on being seen as someone who understands the business, not just HR policy.

I follow a fair, consistent, and documented process regardless of seniority. I investigate thoroughly — gathering evidence, interviewing parties, and maintaining confidentiality. I apply the relevant legislation and company policy to determine the appropriate response, document every step in writing, and consult legal when risk is elevated. I keep the business leader informed at key decision points and outcome stages. The goal is a fair outcome and a clear process that would withstand tribunal scrutiny.

I work with business leaders to map current capability against future strategy — typically 12–24 months out. I analyse attrition trends, skills gaps, and succession pipelines, then develop plans to address gaps through hire, build (L&D), or borrow (contractors, secondments). I present headcount plans with financial modelling to support budget decisions. Workforce planning is most valuable when it's collaborative and data-driven, not a spreadsheet exercise done in isolation.

Culture is built through consistent behaviour from leadership — not values on a wall. I work with leaders to model the desired culture, embed it into hiring, onboarding, performance management, and reward. I use engagement data, exit interviews, and pulse surveys to diagnose culture issues early. I'm direct with leadership when culture risks are emerging — glossing over culture problems is far more expensive than addressing them.

I've managed job evaluation using Mercer, Hay, and Towers Watson methodologies. I've developed remuneration frameworks, conducted annual salary reviews, designed incentive structures, and managed pay equity analysis. I'm familiar with market benchmarking and board remuneration reporting. My approach is to design reward systems that are competitive, equitable, and aligned to the behaviours and outcomes the business values — which isn't always the same as simply paying at median.

I coach managers to address performance early with direct, specific feedback — not to wait until formal action is unavoidable. When formal processes are needed, I ensure managers have documented discussions, set clear SMART goals with improvement timeframes (PIPs), provided support, and followed the prescribed process. I'm honest with managers that performance management done well is time-intensive, and I support them through it. Consistency across the organisation is critical for defensibility.

I focus on systemic approaches rather than one-off programs. I review data by demographic group across the full employee lifecycle — hiring funnel, promotion rates, pay, retention, and engagement scores. I identify where equity gaps exist and work with leaders to address root causes, whether in sourcing strategy, interview processes, manager behaviours, or promotion criteria. I measure outcomes over time, not just activities. Sustainable DEI progress requires accountability and data.

I maintain memberships with SHRM, CIPD, or the relevant professional body for my jurisdiction, which provides legislative updates and guidance. I review Fair Work, employment law, and regulatory updates regularly and translate them into practical implications for the business. For complex or significant changes, I engage employment lawyers. I also build strong external networks with other HR professionals to share perspectives on implementation.
