    Common Interview Questions

I follow a structured process: gather information (what's the exact symptom, when did it start, what changed recently?), reproduce the issue if possible, isolate variables (is it one user or many? one device or multiple?), form a hypothesis, test it, and implement a fix. I start with the simplest explanations first — connectivity, permissions, or a service restart — before escalating to more complex investigations. I document every step, including what I tried that didn't work, so the next engineer has full context.

I triage by business impact and urgency: a system-down issue affecting production takes priority over a single user's email signature question. I use ITSM tools (ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, Freshservice) to track, update, and close tickets systematically. I look for patterns — if five people log the same issue in a day, there's a systemic problem that needs a root-cause fix, not five individual responses. I also manage expectations by communicating realistic resolution times upfront.

I manage AD user accounts, groups, OUs, and Group Policy Objects. I create and disable accounts, manage permissions, and troubleshoot logon issues. In Microsoft 365, I administer Exchange Online (mailboxes, distribution groups, mail flow), SharePoint, Teams, and licencing. I'm comfortable in the M365 Admin Centre and Exchange Admin Centre. I use PowerShell for bulk operations and automation — tasks like bulk user creation, licence assignment, and mailbox exports are much faster with PowerShell than the GUI.

Technical jargon alienates users and erodes trust. I translate problems and solutions into plain language: "Your email isn't syncing because your password expired — let me help you reset it" rather than "Your MAPI authentication failed due to token expiry." I update users proactively rather than waiting for them to chase. I treat every interaction as an opportunity to leave the user more confident with their technology, not dependent on IT for the same issue in future. Empathy and patience are as important as technical skill in this role.

I manage endpoint security using tools like CrowdStrike, Defender for Endpoint, or Sophos — deploying agents, reviewing alerts, and remediating threats. I enforce MDM policies through Intune for device compliance (encryption, patch level, password policy). I conduct phishing simulations and user security awareness training. I manage patch management cycles — testing patches in a staging group before rolling out to the fleet. I treat every alert seriously and escalate when something is beyond my threshold of response.

Documentation is a force multiplier — a well-written solution article prevents the next ten tickets on the same issue. I write step-by-step resolution guides with screenshots for common issues, maintain an asset register with accurate device and licence data, and keep network diagrams and system documentation up to date. I create end-user guides in plain language for common tasks. Good documentation also protects the team: if I'm unavailable, documented procedures mean the team can maintain operations.

A user clicked a phishing link that deployed malware. I isolated the device from the network immediately, notified the security team and manager, preserved evidence by imaging the drive before remediation, reset the user's credentials and MFA, reviewed authentication logs for lateral movement, and restored the system from a clean image. I then created a simplified incident report and used it in our next user security training session (anonymised). Speed of containment and complete isolation are the most important first steps in any incident.

For onboarding: I build a checklist — account creation, licence assignment, device provisioning, access to required systems, email setup, and a welcome session covering IT essentials and security practices. Everything should be ready on day one. For offboarding: I disable accounts immediately upon notification, revoke access across all systems (not just AD — cloud apps, VPN, email), retrieve company devices, transfer data as directed by HR, and document the process for audit purposes. A clean offboarding is as important as a good onboarding.
