    Common Interview Questions

    A.

I build client relationships through consistent delivery — placing quality candidates, providing market intelligence, and being a reliable business partner. I prioritise outreach to target companies through a mix of inbound (referrals, inbound enquiries) and outbound (cold calls, LinkedIn, events). I run regular client check-ins even when I don't have an active role — I want to be front of mind when they next hire. I also identify and develop new clients systematically using market mapping and industry events.

Client side: thorough job briefing to understand the role, team, culture, and assessment criteria. I challenge specs that are unrealistic and set accurate expectations on timeline and market. Candidate side: targeted sourcing across LinkedIn, databases, referrals, and job boards. I screen thoroughly — reviewing CV, conducting in-depth interviews, and assessing skills and cultural fit. I manage the interview process closely, briefing candidates and clients at every stage. I negotiate offers, manage counteroffers, and support the first 90 days to protect the placement.

I invest in relationships with passive candidates — people who aren't actively looking but are open to the right opportunity. I connect and engage on LinkedIn with content and personalised outreach. I maintain a well-tagged database of candidates I've met and follow up periodically. I build referral networks — a placed candidate is often the best source of the next placed candidate. I also attend industry events and speak on panels to build visibility in target candidate markets. Good sourcing is relationship-building, not just boolean searches.

I work to prevent it by uncovering the candidate's real motivations upfront. I explore what would make them accept a counter-offer during the process, not at the offer stage. I prepare candidates for a counter-offer before they resign: "Your employer is likely to match — here's why taking it is usually not in your interest." If a decline happens despite this, I analyse what I missed, rebuild with the client on timeline and process, and accelerate the search with a stronger pool. I don't point fingers — I take ownership of the outcome.

I go beyond CV screening and reference checking. I conduct structured, competency-based interviews that explore evidence of relevant skills and achievements. I test cultural alignment by exploring the candidate's preferred working environment, management style, and career motivations — then comparing that to what I know about the client. I'm honest with candidates when I believe a role isn't right for them, even if they're excited about it. A well-placed candidate stays; a poorly placed candidate leaves within six months — which is bad for everyone.

I set expectations early and honestly: if the spec is unrealistic for the market and budget, I say so immediately with market data to support it. I educate clients on what equivalent candidates are currently earning and what competing employers are offering. I present options: adjust the spec, adjust the budget, or extend the timeline. I maintain regular communication with pipeline updates — even when there's no good news, transparency keeps trust. Clients who are surprised by market realities early in a search are far less frustrated than those who find out after six weeks.

I'm familiar with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles — I handle candidate data with appropriate consent, store it securely, and don't retain it longer than necessary. I'm careful about questions in interviews that could constitute unlawful discrimination. I stay current with Fair Work Act changes and anti-discrimination legislation through professional development and industry association updates. I also ensure job ads are compliant — no discriminatory language or unlawful requirements. Compliance protects candidates, clients, and the agency.
