Common Interview Questions
I believe every student can learn when teaching is responsive to their needs. My practice is built on high expectations for all students, strong relationships that create psychological safety for learning, and explicit instruction paired with meaningful practice. I combine evidence-based approaches — structured literacy, spaced practice, retrieval — with creative and student-centred tasks that build motivation. I see myself as a facilitator of learning, not just a transmitter of content.
Differentiation starts with knowing my students — assessment data, learning histories, and regular conversations. I vary content (what students learn), process (how they engage), and product (how they demonstrate understanding). For students with IEPs I implement adjustments and modifications as specified, and I collaborate with learning support. For extension students I provide depth and complexity tasks, not just more work. I use flexible grouping based on need, not fixed ability tracks.
I planned a collaborative task that fell apart because students didn't have the background knowledge I'd assumed. Midway through, I paused the activity, briefly pre-taught the missing concept using direct instruction, and then returned to the collaborative task with better outcomes. Afterwards, I reviewed my unit plan and added an explicit knowledge check at the start of future units. Responsive teaching means reading the room and adapting, not rigidly following a plan.
I invest heavily in establishing routines and expectations at the start of the year. Consistency is everything — I apply the same standards and consequences for all students, every day. I use low-key, positive strategies first: proximity, private redirects, non-verbals. When escalation is needed, I follow the school's behaviour management process and document formally. I also build relationships before problems arise — students are far more likely to respond to correction from a teacher they trust.
I communicate proactively — not just when there's a problem. I share updates through newsletters, notes home, and parent-teacher interviews. I reach out early when I notice a concern rather than waiting for the formal conference. I listen carefully in parent conversations, validating their perspective while sharing the school's view. I find that most parents are strong allies when they feel respected, informed, and included in their child's progress.
I use formative assessment continuously — exit tickets, mini whiteboards, observation — to check understanding in every lesson and adjust accordingly. I analyse standardised assessment data (NAPLAN, PAT, unit tests) to identify class-wide patterns and individual students who need targeted support. I bring this data to team planning meetings so we can collaborate on common areas of need. Data is most useful when it's recent, specific, and leads to an instructional response.
I engage with the professional literature, participate in school-based PLC cycles, attend external PD aligned to my goals, and seek feedback from instructional leaders and peers. I'm also interested in coaching and mentoring early-career teachers — teaching others deepens my own practice. I maintain my AITSL standards evidence portfolio and approach professional growth with the same expectation I hold for my students: improvement is always possible.
I've researched your school's vision, your approach to learning and wellbeing, and your community context, and I see strong alignment with my own values. [Personalise: mention specific programs, curriculum approaches, community focus, or school values.] I'm looking for a school where I can contribute meaningfully to a collaborative team and grow professionally. What drew me to teaching here is [specific reason], and I'm excited about the potential to make a real difference with this community.
